She opened a separate folder containing a recently submitted invoice. The amount was substantial, but what truly unsettled me was the name listed as the person who had authorized it.
It wasn’t Brittany or Patricia.
It was someone I trusted completely, and the handwritten note attached to the invoice revealed that my exclusion from the wedding might have been planned long before that message arrived…
PART 2 — FINAL: My Son’s Fiancée Removed Me From the Wedding I Paid For. Then I Discovered Who Had Betrayed Me.
Rebecca slowly turned the invoice toward me.
At the bottom, beneath a charge for $18,750, was a signature I recognized immediately.
Ethan Collins.
My son.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
The invoice was labeled Private Family Hospitality Package, but the description underneath made my stomach tighten.
Luxury accommodations for six guests. Private transportation. An exclusive rehearsal dinner. Additional floral arrangements.
And one final item:
Bride’s family celebration suite — authorized by Ethan Collins.
I looked up at Rebecca.
“Why wasn’t I told about this?”
She hesitated.
“Margaret, Ethan explained that you had approved the additional expenses verbally. He said you wanted everything to be a surprise.”
I felt something inside me sink.
“Did he provide written authorization?”
“No.”
“Then why was it added to my account?”
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“He told us he was acting on your behalf. But we haven’t processed the payment yet.”
I studied the signature again.
My son had approved nearly nineteen thousand dollars in additional expenses without asking me.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
Tucked behind the invoice was a handwritten note.
Rebecca carefully unfolded it.
It read:
Please ensure Margaret Collins is not included in the final seating arrangements. Patricia will take her place in the front row. Ethan has agreed this will avoid unnecessary family tension.
I read those words three times.
Ethan had agreed.
My own son had known.
And he had allowed me to keep paying.
“Margaret?” Rebecca asked gently.
I placed the paper on the desk.
“Cancel everything that can legally be canceled. Stop every payment that hasn’t been processed.”
“Of course.”
“And please send me copies of every document.”
Rebecca nodded.
I stood, picked up my handbag, and walked outside.
Only when I reached my car did I begin to cry.
Not because of the money.
Because I finally understood that my son hadn’t simply failed to defend me.
He had participated in excluding me.
The Phone Call I Had Been Dreading
That evening, Ethan called.
“Mom, Brittany says you contacted the wedding planner.”
“That’s right.”
“Why would you do that?”
I stared at the framed photograph of him as a little boy standing beside his father.
“Did you know I wasn’t invited?”
Silence.
“Ethan?”
He sighed.
