“Hi, Mom.”
Monica stared at him.
Daniel swallowed.
“I used to think you left because Dad and I weren’t good enough.”
Nobody moved.
“But Dad told me that’s not true.”
He looked toward me.
“He taught me to ride a bike. He came to every school concert. He makes pancakes on Sundays, even though he always burns the first one.”
A few guests smiled.
Then Daniel continued.
“I wanted to come today because I thought maybe you’d finally want to know me.”
Monica’s expression changed.
“But when we got here, you only talked about Dad’s truck and his money.”
He looked down.
“You didn’t even ask how school was going.”
The silence was overwhelming.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“I hope you’re happy, Mom. But I don’t want Dad to feel small anymore.”
He stepped away from the microphone.
I hurried forward and embraced him.
The Groom’s Unexpected Question
Richard, Monica’s fiancé, approached us.
He looked genuinely confused.
“Monica told me you shared custody,” he said quietly.
I stared at him.
“What?”
He hesitated.
“She said Daniel lived mostly with you because her career required frequent travel. She told me she visited regularly.”
I shook my head.
“She hasn’t seen him in almost ten years.”
Richard looked toward Monica.
“Is that true?”
Monica opened her mouth, but no answer came.
Richard’s face fell.
He wasn’t angry at me.
He was struggling to understand why the woman he was about to marry had concealed such an important part of her life.
“I think we need to talk privately,” he told her.
Then he turned to Daniel.
“I’m sorry tonight became so difficult for you.”
Daniel nodded politely.
“Thank you.”
We left before the celebration ended.
Six Months Later
I never learned every detail of what happened between Monica and Richard that evening.
